Is there any way to fix a theme that shows a square where a symbol like ™ should be?

Seems to me like the type of font does not allow that kind of text symbol, try editing the style files and change them to a different type of font and see if that does the trick.

No good - fonts listed are the same.

It more or less boils down to one symbol and that is the ™ symbol shows as a rectangle or square, such as in NukeSentinel™ 2.0.2.

Solved this one.

This theme came with an addone that would allow you to change items on the theme, one of those things being encrypting the source code.

When I turned that choice off (no encryption of the source code) all showed fine.

Sometimes it's just that simple icon_razz.gif ...The challenge is finding it. Glad you got it fixed, and thanks for posting the solution.
