PC and TV combination displays are not new to the tech industry. But Sony's (NYSE: SNE - news) recent creation, the 17-inch widescreen flat panel LCD PC/TV Display MFM-HT75W, raises the bar with a few innovative features that bridge the world of television and computing.

Sony's display comes HDTV-ready (HD tuner not included) and equipped with the latest technology for superb video quality. A trip to any electronics store with this device on display will confirm this. The display supports an active resolution up to 1280 x 768 pixels, with any HD format up to 1080i.

But this excellent video quality is not all. Sony included a new picture-in-picture feature that allows users to watch television in one picture while their computer's desktop remains on the other. Moreover, these screens can be customized to three different sizes and four different locations. And the built-in TV tuner lets users access this feature without having to buy any additional cards for their computer.Although not the most powerful audio system available, two 3-watt side speakers and a 5-watt subwoofer unit in the base bolster the "all-in-one" function of Sony's display. But audiophiles will want to use their own external speakers.

The display is held up by a slip stand behind the monitor that can be tilted back (but not forward) up to 20 degrees. There are further adjustability limits as you cannot adjust for height or pivot the screen.

You can connect your PC or Mac to the Sony unit, which features S-Video, composite and, component input for DVD players or other devices. Also included is a remote control, a headphone jack, and a wall-mounting kit should you choose to hang the 7-inch thick display.

Available direct from Sony, the unit sells for $599 for the 17-inch and $799 for the 19-inch. This display offers just about everything a user could want in a TV and computer monitor. With a reputable name attached to a well-designed product, Sony's display is a good buy.
