How can I change the default homepage for sites on server?

I haven't tried in a while but I'm not too familiar with linux servers

I wasn't sure if htaccess was used or where I could/should change settings for this...

I guess this question may be premature if I were to end up attempting to googletap the sites later anyway....

any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated...

-Sandman

(I am currently using redirect code on index.html to get to index.html- and want default to be index.html to avoid having to do this)

I guess what I'm asking is where are the default homepage settings set?

I am not quite sure what page you want as your homepage or which you are redierecting from but lets say we want our root index file name to your site to be index.php. By uploading your .htaccess to root folder and as a ASCII text file, you can specify the default page that loads by adding the following line to your htaccess file...

DirectoryIndex index.php

After a little research, I discovered that some ftp prgrams do not allow you to view filres that begin with a "." - they are assumed to be system files and are therefore hidden. -That does not mean that they do not exist on the server.

I use a ftp prog that does this -

I am in the process of attempting to upload a file name htaccess.txt and then renaming it .htaccess to see if this works....

I only hope that after I do this - is there are any probs - I can delete the hidden file lol

thanks
-I'll let you know how this goes here in a bit!

worked like a charm!

now I can google tap the site too!

I simply created a text file namded htaccess.txt with the line "DirectoryIndex index.php"
in it, uploaded it, and then renamed it .htaccess

Although it was now invisible to me - It was there becaues it changed the deafult homepage to index.php!

Most FTP clients have an option to view them. File -> View Dot Files (or similar routine).

Using ws_ftpLE, just type "-al" into the little text box on the server side of the window and hit enter. That will show all the files.
