I am a newbie in every way you can imagine. I tried uploading another copy of mainfile.php , but all I get on my site is the background. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a good lesson to learn the art of backups!!

Anyway the only way to resolve this is to take a fresh copy of mainfile.php from the nuke version you downloaded (and make any changes you made to your lost one) OR completely remove all your nuke files (not database) and re-upload them.

It all really depends on what you have modified in your mainfile.php
