Today I spent quite some time deleting thousands of spam comments (mostly ads of adult sites) which were found in the Comments part of stories.

My website (www.wenhui.ch) uses version 7.5.

Is there any way to prevent this kind of spamming? Would appreciate help.

Another question: is it worthwhile to upgrade to version 8 from 7.5?

I performed a search on spam comments and did not find a clue.

Best bet would be to have comments for only registered users and assign a moderator to them or watch them yourself. Or just turn off comments completely. Updating your nuke won't fix that problem.

Any registered users can post comments on stories on my website.

The thing is these spammers somehow automatically registered one account after another on the website and then post thousands of spam comments.

We tried to ban the offending IP and user name, but not much help.

Fortunately it occurred not so often now. icon_mad.gif

You could add the words you dont like to your censorlist in your config.php that would block those words from showing up.

Thanks for the replies.

I have activated random security codes to the log in. It seems that has prevented further spamming of the comments part.

Cheers
