*wipes dust off self* Haven't been here in forever. How's everyone?

Anywho, I've recently upgraded to Flash CS3, and there's that one thing they call a preloader which eludes me the most.

What I'm trying to achieve is a SINGLE preloader (beit an external swf, or a function) that I can call to when I want anything to load. Specifically, think of an image gallery. When you click next, I want the preloader to be there, show the status of the image, then fade out and fade the image in. What if I have 200 images? Another example, think of the same gallery. This time we have thumbnails. I want a preloader to show the status of EACH thumbnail loading. That's a lot of keyframes for a preloader, right? So how do I do this in AS? I'm currently using AS3, but if you can explain it in 2 or 1, I can convert it easily. I just can't grasp how to make a preloader modular?!
