New Posts in forums not highlighted

When you log into a forum, you usually have a little arrow next to each topic in the forum.

When a new post goes in that topic, it highlights.

When I come into my new forum i made, Lets just say there has been 5 new posts since last visit, 1 in each topic, I will look at the first 1, but when I click the back button, all the arrows are now blank and people cant remember which ones had new posts in.

On another website i regularly visit, it works fine for them.

Is there something that needs to be changed to get it so the arrows stay highlighted until you have visited each topic
