What file do you edit (and with what?) to alter a theme?

First let me apologize. A novice is above me...but trudge on will I.
I have PHP Nuke 6.9 and am trying to edit a theme.

Color changes mostly is the attempt (and moving the login module to the top right corner of the page).
I am using the "Sunset" theme. I can edit the page (from the mozilla browser from the "edit with PHP..." that opens PHPed v 1.75) and then save it as "theme.php" which does great for that page...and apparently makes All the modules that page (hence the admin.php becomes the index.php, etc).
Obviously its a floor to keyboard interface error. Should I be looking for a specific file?
Your aid in this is appreciated...I will be supplying tomatoes to those who need to throw them at the community idiot...

to edit a theme you need to edit a bathtub of a lot of files. to be honest i would not really tamper with anyone else theme but make a new one. We have experienced problems of people taking our themes and using them in other places by taking off the copyright material.

Thanks,
I think I realize I was attempting the wrong thing from the wrong direction.
