I when I click on them I get an Illegal Content error page.

Any clues?

Sounds like the same problem your having with your smilies. Have you added anything to your site like mods/hacks/tweaks?

I had a major issue with a conflict with the php in my sites. I posted on it about my Forums were missing. I have since backed up, reinstalled 7.6, reloaded my database and I think the issue with the post since last visit has to do with the database not quite being in sync with the site, as I can click on original post threads, but threads started before the 7.6 upgrade don't work.

The smilies, I don't understand... the paths are defined, but the window won't open.
