hmmm could this be used on the main page of say the Fire theme, on the main page. If so exactly where would that code go to, in the themes header file or in the main file, or just the site index?
Would be really kewl as part of my main theme.

You should just be able to add any type of background, whether an image bg or a plain color bg to your Nuke site. Look in the styles folder of your theme.
