User Registration Problem

Hi...sry for being a nub but I have a problem concerning a new user registration. I have put up a new phpnuke site and all seemed to be working well until a new user registers, they put in the required fields (nickname, email and password). When they hit submit it gives them the name guest every time....now when the next person comes in to register, it gives nickname in use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
