Im sure the majority of you know this already but for those that dont, Microsoft lost a courtcase last year against Eolas, about a patent. As a result of this microsoft is now forced to change a few things in there internet explorer. Any1 who uses applets, flash, quicktime, and other things that use an embed code are going to have to change there coding so that users with the new internet explorer will still be able to view what they have up on there pages.
[ Register or login to view links on this board.] and [ Register or login to view links on this board.] are two pages from macromedia and microsoft explaining this better and giving links to more pages with info on this.

Microsoft have said that they will challenge this ruling, and hopefully they will win, either way though the ruling wont come before the next ie which is gonna be released pretty soon, so changes are going t ohave t obe made to codes.awesome Eolas, gotta make things difficult dont they icon_mad.gif.

Yea, I've read about that. It means that I'm going to have a whole lot of recoding to do. I think I read on Sitepoint some CSS workarounds that you can go ahead and start using now so that it won't matter when the change comes. I'll see if I can hunt up a link.

I'm hoping that Microsoft will be able to tie the issue up in court the way they usually do and it won't happen for a long time.

This would be one time I wouldn't mind seeing Micro$oft tie up the courts...

A fast court case would be better, the courts have already ruled in favour of Eolas, microsoft are challenging it, th ruling that microsoft have to change stands unless the court rules otherwise, i think thats the case.

OMFG red that is the best awesome sig EVER the WORM whoooooo go breakdancing ...... sorry lol im going back looking at that ........ dont ever change it lmao

I don't think Microsoft is gonna back down from this one. According to what I've read, their claim is that Eolas got the patent when it shouldnt have because the US Patents office didn't know what they were doing when they gave out the patent. Eolas applied for the patent in 1994 and it was granted in 1998. Using the embed method for third party plugins was already used and supported by the W3C before 1994, so Eolas should never have been given the patent in the first place.

Anyway, I found the link I was looking for that shows a work around for the problem. It uses Javascript to call the <object> tag dynamically from an external .js file. I haven't tried it yet, but it's supposed to stop the pop-up that IE will have (should MS lose their case).

The only problem I see is that if you have alot of stuff embedded into your pages - Flash, music, Java applets, PDFs, anything that uses the <embed> or <object> tags, it's still gonna be a major PITA to change it all.

Here's the link:
