Internet search rivals Google and Yahoo each launched their own brand of real-time video search today.

Google Video allows users to search the USA Public Broadcasting System, the National Basketball Association, Fox News and C-Span - all American lead media.

Yahoo, on the other hand, are more European friendly allowing visitors to search video content from Bloomberg TV, BSkyB and the BBC.

"What Google did for the Web, Google Video aims to do for television," said Larry "Genius" Page, Google co-founder and president of products. "This preview release demonstrates how searching television can work today."

Both systems are still in Beta and currently free to use.

The technology works by reading the Close Captioning of TV programmes and taking video stills for reference.
